Who likes poetry,anyway?

God does.

I do.

I write haiku, an oriental 3-line poem, all based on Scripture. Please humor me, try two of my favorites on for size:

Unbelievable.                                                                          To say I love you,
Jump into your Father’s arms.                                                  we send flowers or a card,
Be a child again. (Based on Matt 18:3)                                    but God sent a cross. (Based on John 19:17)

Consider Ephesians 2:10 with me for a surprise of your life.

For we are God’s POEM created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared for us to live in.” Original in Greek.  JB Phillips translated it as “A work of art.”

Right now, do you belong to God through Christ? THEN you are God’s poem. Think of how many “poems” God has written. Sorry, William Shakespeare and Robert Frost, eat your heart out, but move out of the way. Here comes our poetical God. Perhaps in eternity he will read his poems to all the citizens of heaven. I hope so! What a poetical celebration that will be. And all the saints of all the ages are invited! So non-poetical lovers, bring a book to read.

God lives in beauty and creativity. Look around you at your world. Check out Nahum 1:3b “His way is in the whirlwind and the storm and clouds are the dust of his feet.”

Five of the OT books are “God-breathed” in poetry, Job through Song of Songs.

So, dear reader, enjoy being God’s rhythm and rhyme.

  2. Dear Leon,
Catchy title ” Who likes poetry, anyway?” If I answer honestly, I’d reply, “Personally, not me, not much.” But you have truly given me a new perspective on poetry and God. I know that poetic language is woven throughout God’s Word; I’ve never thought of “God’s poems” – very interesting! And I truly like and appreciate your haiku – beautiful and meaningful, as always. Tomorrow – January 30 – a day to celebrate your birthday!!! God bless you, I’ll be thinking about you and our precious granddaughter Shalom – her 7th birthday is January 30, too:) love Janey
