An illusionist makes something appear to be real when actually it does not exist. A Russian illusionist “incinerated” a young lady, had her appear in a framed picture, and then caused her to reappear unscathed by the flames.
Moses, tending his father-in-law’s sheep and goats, often witnessed the common occurrence of a dry acacia bush burning in the arid desert. When he saw the burning bush, he knew it was not an illusion. However, as he investigated the fiery bush, he saw an uncommon occurrence. The fiery bush was burning, but was not being consumed.
When Moses approached the bush, he saw the “face” of God and heard his voice, “Remove your shoes you’re on holy ground.” The fire symbolized God’s powerful and preserving presence. God used this miracle to get Moses’ undivided attention for a specific task–to lead his people out of Egypt’s bondage.
His miracles in our lives are not illusions in a circus side show to entertain us. Today God confronts us–in our own burning bush encounters–to get our attention for the task he has for his people. And about three years ago, he got mine. Stage 4 cancer!
One of these days we may see God’s “face” in the flames, and he will fire up our assignment. As He prepared Moses by having him tend sheep for 40 years in the desert, he’ll prepare us for our task.
Let’s anticipate our burning bush experience and praise Him that He invites us to work shoulder to shoulder with, and for, the Sovereign Creator of the universe. Your task may scare you to death, but he won’t let you be consumed by anything in his creation.
God’s no illusionist! He’s for real!
