Jesus Preached Self-Mutilation?
Put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony. Pro 23:2 Is Solomon sanctioning suicide?
If I have failed to show compassion, then let my arm be broken off at the joint. Job 31:22 Is Job encouraging self-mutilation?
If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out. Matt 5:29 Is Jesus requiring us to blind ourselves?
Your conclusion is undoubtedly that these are drastic measures and aren’t these commands extreme? Then you are right on target. They are exaggerated. And you have just defined the word “hyperbole,” an extreme exaggeration to get a spiritual principle across and to emphasize the seriousness of the offense or sin.
Solomon emphasizes the necessity of curbing your appetite; Job pleads for a loving concern for people; and Jesus clearly warns that lust is the same as adultery. So hyperboles are used to fix firmly these truths into our hearts and minds so that those who belong to God are preserved blameless before Him.
